Assignment Part 3 – Location

Brief

You are to create two different fashion images, both taken on location, and they must be full body length.

The first must be an interior, where you will balance existing continuous light with professional portable flash light. The second must be outside, where you will again be balancing the ambient daylight/ nocturnal light, with portable flash kits. Both shoots must use different suitable models, and the locations must be appropriate to the chosen clothing.

A selection of images where I have highlighted the lighting may be found in my fashion note book. To see full contact sheets for both Location Shoots please see:

Lessons Learnt

  • Although the fashion assignment has been a different challenge, the lessons learnt from Editorial and Advertising shoots remain extant.
  • Lighting on location was a challenge. The change in ambient lighting, sometimes every minute, proved to be thought provoking and alterations in light positions and camera settings were at times required.
  • To position non professional models also proved difficult as they were unused to being relaxed and comfortable in front of a camera especially when lighting was involved.
  • Apart from positioning models in the correct place to avoid badly composed images, such as trees growing out of heads and unparalleled lines with natural fence-lines, also proved difficult to initially compose. However, I feel this eventually worked well resulting in the above image.
  • Dealing with other public when shooting was fun, some were truly interested and asked polite questions. I found by involving them for a short while proved rewarding as they found the process interesting and wished me every success.
  • Finding locations suitable for purpose and selected clothing has been a challenge. This was emphasised with the images I took at my inaugural fashion shoot on location with the results were not acceptable.
  • It has become more obvious that the skills learnt in one module become readily transferrable and have all proven to be an invaluable resource time and time again.
  • This fashion assignment, especially on location, has been difficult to fulfil.  Initially attaining models/friend to assist and then trying to relax them so they act naturally and comfortably in front of the camera was only part of the problems to solve. Lighting, colour of clothing, what made my choices fit into the brief? Fashion spring/summer 2017! My initial thoughts were of high fashion clothing and where am I going to source them! However, after a fruitful discussion with my lecturers put my mid at rest and I was able to think more ‘outside the box’. By using seasonal sports and horse riding clothing helped enormously. My initial location shoot did not work so well as I fell into the trap of poorly composed compositions, as mentioned above. Nevertheless, by completing several extra shoots certainly proved to be an invaluable course of action.
